How we immerse ourselves in the world, shapes how we show up and navigate it.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

This week I had the privilege to spend time and work with\u00a0Dr. Rebekah Granger-Ellis, whom I interview in my book about\u00a0InnS\u00e6i and intuition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I first got to know her when I attended the\u00a0IMAGINE Leadership Experience<\/a>\u00a0at Oxford University a couple of years ago, and her focus was on how leaders can drive systemic change by applying the most recent research in neuroscience onto their ways of being, perceiving, thinking and acting. Since then, she’s gone on to found\u00a0The Institute for Applied Transformative Neuroscience.<\/p>\n

This week, Dr. Rebekah Granger-Ellis and I talked about the welcomed and increased awareness around the negative, often destructive effects of social media and life in the virtual world, especially on the younger generations. We celebrated this increased awareness, spoke about what neuroscience, mind-body knowledge and InnS\u00e6i can teach us when it comes to healing ourselves and a whole generation.<\/p>\n

We discussed the campaign around\u00a0The Anxious Generation<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0Smartphone Free Childhood<\/em>\u00a0movement in the UK.<\/p>\n

Dr. Rebekah Granger-Ellis raised a compelling point that the\u00a0Anxious Generation<\/em>‘s norm, may be the lonely, traumatised, overly-stressed brain and that this means they may not know how to begin to find a more optimal, regulated and peaceful mind that helps us think big, innovate, build peace, create constructive things and make them come true.<\/p>\n

What does this mean?<\/h5>\n

<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
To put this into context, we’re social beings who need each other to learn, thrive, exist and be well. We co-regulate as a species, like\u00a0Dr. Rebekah Granger-Ellis<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0explains in my book\u00a0InnS\u00e6i: heal, revive and reset with the Icelandic art of intuition<\/a>.<\/h5>\n
This means that we regulate each other’s nervous systems in ways that can open up our minds, empower us, discover stuff and feel seen, over to making us close our hearts and minds, feel unheard, stressed and unwell.<\/h5>\n
This affects on our listening skills, ability to see opportunities, beauty, experience sense of awe and lead with compassion, resilience and mental agility.<\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But co-regulation touches on our nature of being social beings. Because it also means that we need others to help us regulate our own nervous system. This is how closely knitted we are. As the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh said: \u201cWe inter-are\u201c.<\/p>\n

I need you to co-regulate with, in order to be alive<\/h5>\n

<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

As Rebekah taught me, when we can’t co-regulate because of lack of social connection, because of extreme loneliness, our health deteriorates.<\/p>\n

We know that loneliness, depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of disability and illness in the world, according to the World Health Organisation, and we’ve seen waves of awareness around this lately, in particular in relation to the younger generations.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Jonathan Haidt\u00a0and\u00a0Zach Rausch, in the newsletter\u00a0After Babel, the loss of community is one of the main reasons for the deterioration of mental health and “the crushing loneliness of Gen Z and Gen Alpha”. The antidote, they suggest, is strengthening social, in-person connections, “the real-world human communities and neighbourhoods we live in”.<\/p>\n

US surgeon general Vivek Murthy has stated that \u2018loneliness is like hunger, a signal we\u2019re lacking something for survival\u2019.\u00a0<\/strong>Not only does it undermine physical and mental health, but, in his diagnosis, it underpins many of our more pernicious ills, including violence, addiction and extremism.\u00a0The antidote, he says, is human connection.<\/p>\n

– Something that\u00a0Susan McPherson\u00a0writes brilliantly about in her book:\u00a0The Lost Art of Connecting.<\/p>\n

There are many reasons for why we’ve become increasingly disconnected from ourselves, and consequently other people, beings and the world around us.<\/p>\n

Having explored this disconnection for over 20 years, first in myself and then across disciplines, sectors, I\u2018ve discovered that finding our way home to ourselves, from there to others and the world we live in, shifts the centre of gravity in how we show up, innovate, interact, lead and learn. It actually stimulate not only our wellbeing but also mental agility, and the \u201ahuman genius\u2018.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t either or, it\u2019s complex, and that\u2019s okay<\/h5>\n

I celebrate the increased emphasis on intuition, spiritualism, human-centered design of systems, including how the change we need to see in the world starts from with us.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\n
I do think it is important we not adopt an either or narrative around our intelligence and intuition. Intuition is fundamental to our intelligence, it won\u2018t fit into a box, because then it ceases to flow and do it\u2018s job. Without intuition we don\u2018t reason well. Without it we can\u2018t innovate or be creative.<\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n

When we are disconnected from it, we\u2018ve become disconnected from our whole being. In other words, we need to be present in our whole-selves in order to function fully.\u00a0 Makes sense, right?<\/p>\n

In a new book, four McKinsey senior partners show why leadership starts from within us, because leaders must connect with themselves first before they can inspire and empower their organisations.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>Many leaders who have mastered all the right executive skills, including financial acumen, strategic and operational management, and system thinking, still struggle to link their aspirations with the actual performance of their organizations.<\/h5>\n
After a careful analysis of what was holding back these otherwise talented executives, we concluded that on a deep psychological level they were not reflecting enough about how to become a more human-centric leader who is able to connect authentically with themselves and their teams.\u201d<\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Intuition changes over time, and it is informed by many things, including the environment and context we immerse ourselves in. For the Anxious Generation, which in my experience is also middle-aged people like myself, the task is to become aware of what we pay attention to and what is informing our intuitions, InnS\u00e6i. To ask ourselves, how does this affect how I show up in the world, have impact and build relationships?<\/p>\n
