Intuition & A Leader’s Strong Inner Compass

Three keys, a quote and an invitation

One

The one thing that’s certain about today’s business environment is uncertainty and unpredictability. The challenges leaders face are fast-changing and interconnected, a topic which is a red thread in all my writing and work.

Building a strong inner compass fit for today’s world is one of the three main pillars of the InnSæi framework which I train leaders to master. It recognises and builds on the pivotal role intuition plays in our intelligence, orientation and leadership, especially during times of transition, uncertainty, chaos and complexity.

Two

A recent Harvard Business Review article says this clearly and I highly recommend you read it.

It argues that “in this world, executives must learn how to “pivot with purpose”: to constantly and courageously remain anchored in their values while adjusting to meet new realities.”

In a fast changing world, our mission is not to keep static, but anchored. For this we need depth and long-term intention and direction.

“The most effective leaders know who they are, what they stand for, and why they lead. That clarity allows them to move fast without losing their footing.”

Leading with a strong inner compass – InnSæi – is a way of leading through turbulence,  grounded in purpose, values and deep inner knowing and knowledge.

Three

Last week I also got to know the work of Rita McGrath – which resonates deeply.

At a recent Thinkers50 event in London Rita said: “We’re going through a moment of “great unfreezing” – a period when assumptions melt, categories shift, and organisations suddenly see possibilities where they once saw constraints.” – Rita McGrath

This speaks so deeply to InnSæi and ‘the two rhythms’ we need to hone, in order to master our intuition and optimise our intelligence, – including felt sense, gut feel, creativity, as well as analysis, data, reason and logic.

This is what we’re focusing on now in the third Module in the InnSæi Signature Course, where the two fantastic cohorts of leaders, managers and experts from around the globe are far into the last module of the course, and will graduate in mid-December.

A quote:

As Peter Drucker warned, “The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence, it is to act with yesterday’s logic.” Turbulence, then, is not the threat; it’s the test. The challenge is the opportunity. The chaos is the proving ground.

An invitation

Wisdom is asking the right questions. Clarity comes with presence and heightened awareness about how and to what we pay attention.

My invitation this week is for you to:

Find a moment to reflect.

Ask yourself: When I look back on this decade, what was my purpose with my leadership?

What intention did I have, for my organisation and my team?

Am I currently firmly anchored (mind+body+soul) in that vision, intention and purpose so that it gives me flexibility to weather storms and pivot, while staying grounded in this vision?
